What is Evergreen Content?
Some content is topical, some news based and some content is evergreen. Evergreen Content is content which won’t be old news in a few months time, but like an evergreen plant will be green and seem fresh all year round.
An Evergreen post on your blog will be still attracting readers consistently months, even years after it was first published.
Quite often Evergreen Content is the most popular content on a blog, as people are coming to your blog by finding these evergreen posts.
In summary Evergreen Content is timeless, useful and interesting years into the future. It’s also still relevant into the future.
Why do you need Evergreen Content?
- Writing Evergreen Content is actually a really good investment of your time, as it will keep paying off, unlike topical posts, which will have a shelf-live.
- Improved search rankings – Search engines prefer quality, evergreen posts over short-lived articles.
- Increase in traffic – Higher search engine rankings means an increase in traffic.
Evergreen posts attract people that are genuinely interested in learning more about that specific topic, so they will also me more likely to click through to other posts and be return readers.
Have you posted Evergreen Content? Most people have posted some Evergreen posts and one way to check is to look at your analytics. See which blog posts are attracting the most traffic and then which of these are over a few weeks old. In most cases this will be Evergreen.
Based on your analytics, which sort of post are top performers? Can you create something in a similar area that includes useful, timeless content?
How to create Evergreen Content
How-to’s and tutorial type posts are a very popular type of Evergreen posts. Make sure you pack them with value and people will keep coming back.
Creating longer Evergreen posts can also be useful as people will then come to use your posts a like a reference book, which means repeat views.
Look after your Evergreen Content
- Make sure you up-date your Evergreen posts if any of the information changes.
- Think above removing dates from posts, especially older ones.
- Think of showcasing your Evergreen posts in your sidebar.
- Link your Evergreen posts together.
What kind of evergreen content does well on your blog? What do you enjoy on other people’s blogs?

Thanks for clarifying that in such an easy way Aby. I have heard of Evergreen content but not fully grasped what it is until now. From your explanation Ive realised one or two of my reviews are just that, evergreen content, as they are my most viewed posts from last year and this. Xx
Oh this is interesting. I thought Evergreen content was just old content – whoops! Now I think about it though, I realise that my most read posts are Evergreen ones. 🙂
My most read posts that keep getting viewed I guess are evergreen for this reason, but they are not posts that I am sure I understand why people keep finding them and coming back!!! Oh well I guess I shouldn’t complain xx

This is really interesting – I definitely have a few posts like this, but if I’m honest, the reason why they’re so popular baffles me! I think I might need to ponder on this a bit more…. #TheList

I need to go back and update some of mine because my style has changed again! Fab advise as always Aby x
This is a really useful post, Aby. It makes me feel a bit better that I don’t really follow the seasons or a blogging calendar as much as I should and probably many of my posts are Evergreen.
My most popular posts are my Ikea Hack Study and bedroom makeovers. It helped that Ikeahackers.net linked back to my website for my study makeover. I guess because they are tutorial-types too.
Thanks for hosting #TheList
Great advice as always, I need to get to work on creating more of these.

Great advice. I think our ‘how to’ posts are the best for evergreen content. We really must produce more! #TheList
My top piece of evergreen content has to be ‘How to make Olaf out of fondant icing’ – I had no idea when I wrote it how much longevity it would have! #thelist
