Do you need a blogging niche to be successful?

I was doing a Facebook live last week. One of the attendees asked whether she needed a niche to be able to monetise her blog. It sparked a bit of a discussion, so I thought I would share my thoughts with you today.

Most of you reading this blog post will be in the family lifestyle or parenting niche. Whatever you want to call it, we’re all in the same boat. The question was, whether she needed a more specific niche in order to be able to make money and sell products. My first instinct was to say that it’s quite possible to make a decent income when your blog is in the broader parenting niche. You might already be doing this or know bloggers who are.

Blogging niche Do you want to create a product to sell on your blog? Do you worry this will be hampered because you are niche less? I walk you through how to figure out what your niche is and therefore what your products could be focused on.

However, I do think it’s important when you are thinking about making an income from products i.e. passive income. This niche will help you focus on which products you can sell. Your niche will be the thing that people always ask you about. It will be the thing that you answer questions about on a daily basis. The thing that people know you for. You might write a parenting blog, but what do you answer the majority of questions about? What is it that people come to you for? What are you on authority in? That’s your niche.

I really believe that most people, if not all people, have a niche; they just haven’t found it yet. Most of us have something we can sell and something that we can give advice on or even an area in which we can create and sell products. Whether you’re a brilliant designer and could sell beautiful downloads or maybe you’re really good at giving people advice and have been through a lot in your life, in which case maybe a self health help e-book would be the product for you. There’s a product in all of us.

Now it might take you a while to figure out what your product should be, what is your skill and the specifics of your niche. You might be able to do this on your own or you might need some guidance. Either way when you figure out the answers to these questions, you will have a clear picture of which area you should be focusing on.

Products are a way of packaging up all the information that you have and giving it to someone in an easy to handle format. Your products could be teaching someone a skill, they could be making someone’s life easier, adding value to their day in some way. Passive income through products is a brilliant way to make money from your blog, which is not ultimately reliant on brands choosing you to work with them.

It’s important to think about serving your community first and foremost. You need to give them lots of free value, before they will even consider buying a product from you. Plus you need to keep on nurturing them even if they never buy your product.

In order to be able to market your product you need an email list. All bloggers (even those who don’t ever want to sell a product!) should have an email list. I have written about this value before. However, just to recap you need to give them a reason to be on your list. Then continually give them reasons to stay on your list. Don’t just send them your RSS feed, add value in the emails you send).

Let’s recap!

Find your niche by thinking about

  • What do you have experience in?
  • Where your skills lie?
  • Questions people always ask you about?
  • The thing that lights your fire?

I hope that this has got your creative juices flowing and your mind bubbling with ideas. I would love to hear about your ideas for products in the comments.
